Does Manned Security Still Have a Place in our New Digital Age?

The world is ever-changing. Innovation abounds, with new technologies popping up left, right, and centre. And the security industry is no different. As security evolves, so too do security threats, and the security industry evolves in turn.

When 64% of companies worldwide have experienced a cyber-attack, investing in digital security just makes sense. Still, if somebody really wants to find a way in, they often will.

If you’ve only got a fully automated, unmanned security system, there’s no one around to analyse potential risks and call for help should an issue arise. Does the same apply to physical security?

Do we still need manned security when we have technological security in the form of security revolving doors, mantrap portals, and access control systems?

Physical Security vs Manned Security

With the increasing use of technologies like cameras, access control systems, motion detectors, and so on, it might seem that the age of manned security is long behind us.

Biometric revolving doors can be used to protect high-security, special access areas, authorising based on facial recognition and voice-activated technology. Speed gates can do the job of slowing and managing the flow of traffic through a building. Further still, access control systems can ensure an accurate log of visitors is maintained.

So is manned security necessary?

The benefits of manned security

Depending on the nature of the business, manned security can do a great job of providing a huge deterrent to criminals. The presence of guards and their ability to respond quickly in the event of an intrusion can be incredibly useful for businesses whose data needs extra protection.

At the same time, it is the job of security doors to prevent any intrusions, using anti-piggybacking technology that only allows authorised persons to enter.

With such advanced technology available to us, it’s easy to see why we might at least reduce manned security efforts.

Meeting in the middle to be at the top

When it comes to the question ‘do we still need manned security in this digital age?’, the answer is not so clear cut.

Depending on your overall security needs and strategy, the levels of each will vary. For some businesses, guard detail would be gratuitous.

While some workplaces simply don’t require guard detail, others store protected data or assets on-site, and need manned security should an intrusion occur.

Working hand in hand

It boils down to this: when physical security performs best, it saves manned security time and effort.

Choosing manned security alone would be a mistake – human error and sheer circumstance often get in the way, and can allow mistakes or intruders to go undetected.

For the best of both worlds, one guard can man the access control system. Instead of having multiple people on multiple doors, having a dedicated person or team manage the security features that work to your benefit can save your business money and prevent time from being wasted.

In some instances, it is unlikely that technological security will ever outweigh manned security, but in an ideal world, the two work together for the best result.
